Beschreibung

Sodium Sulfate, also known as sodium sulfate or Glauber’s salt, is a chemical compound with various applications across different industries. It is a white, odorless crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water. Sodium sulfate is derived from both natural and synthetic sources and has been utilized for centuries due to its versatility and beneficial properties.

Sodium sulfate (also known as sodium sulfate or sulfate of soda) is an inorganic compound with the formula Na2SO4, as well as several related hydrates. All forms are white solids that are highly soluble in water. With an annual production of 6 million tonnes, the decahydrate is a major commodity chemical product. It is mainly used as a filler in the manufacture of powdered home laundry detergents and in the Kraft process of paper pulping for making highly alkaline sulfides.

Merkmale & Vorteile:

The utility of Sodium Sulphate can be attributed to several key advantages:

Affordability: Sodium sulfate is cost-effective, making it an attractive option for industries that require large quantities of the compound.

Versatility: Its wide range of applications across different industries highlights its versatility as a chemical compound.

Eco-Friendly: Sodium sulfate is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, posing minimal harm to ecosystems when handled and disposed of properly.

Effective Dyeing Agent: In the textile industry, it aids in achieving uniform and vibrant colors in fabrics during the dyeing process.

Regulatory Approval: It has been approved for use in various industries by regulatory agencies, ensuring its safety and suitability for its intended applications.

Stabilität/Haltbarkeit:

Stable, it oxidizes slightly with long-term storage. When stored in a cool, dry location, the expected shelf life with minimal degradation (less than 1% activity) is one year. Actual shelf life may be longer.

Application:

Detergents

The largest use is as filler in powdered home laundry detergents, consuming approximately 50% of world production.

Papermaking

in the Kraft process for the manufacture of wood pulp. Organics present in the “black liquor” from this process are burnt to produce heat, which is needed to drive the reduction of sodium sulfate to sodium sulfide.

Glassmaking

Sodium sulfate is a fining agent to help remove small air bubbles from molten glass. It fluxes the glass, and prevents scum formation of the glass melt during refining.

Textiles

Sodium sulfate is added to increase the solution’s ionic strength. This helps in “leveling,” i.e., reducing negative electrical charges on textile fibers so that dyes can penetrate evenly. Unlike the alternative sodium chloride, sodium sulfate does not corrode the stainless steel vessels used in dyeing.

Food industry

Sodium sulfate is used as a diluent for food colors.
