It effectively binds to iron (Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺) and calcium ions (Ca²⁺), forming water-soluble complexes in an aqueous solution, thus preventing these metal ions from bonding to the surfactants, which are commonly ionic in cleaning formulas. In this way, EDTA-2Na contributes to softening the water and maintaining the effectiveness of the surfactant.
